Institutional Programs (CFI)

The Institutional Programs Office on the Vancouver campus provides administrative and strategic support to all researchers pursuing major federal, provincial and regional infrastructure awards at the Vancouver and Kelowna campuses.

Research Facilitator in the Okanagan Office of Research Services is available to offer onsite program and grant development support to Okanagan campus researchers applying for research infrastructure funding.

Internal processes and timelines specific to the Okanagan Office of Research Services can be found below.

CFI John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) Competitions

Proposals to the John R. Evans Leaders Fund are used to attract or retain faculty in priority areas as identified in the university’s Strategic Research Plan. There are two categories of candidates:

  • Attraction candidates are new recruits to UBC appointed within 24 months of the CFI submission deadline
  • Retention candidates are existing UBC faculty members

Okanagan campus researchers applying for the CFI John R. Evans Leaders Fund in the attraction or retention category should refer to the UBC Okanagan CFI Application Instructions & Deadlines (below) for internal allocations, processes and timelines.

Proposals are vetted internally and only strong proposals are selected for submission to CFI. As internal screening is rigorous, applicants are encouraged to prepare well-developed applications.

One month following the submission to CFI, a matching funds application must be submitted to the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF). NEW! A full BCKDF Step 1 proposal is now part of the internal adjudicaton and selection of proposals. Refer to the BCKDF website for guidelines, application form template and webinar extract. An internal BCKDF application guide is available by request from the CFI Research Facilitator.

Contact the CFI Research Facilitator in the Okanagan Office of Research Services for program support, 1-on-1 proposal development support, criteria review and editorial assistance on the proposal. Additional resources for writing the CFI and BCKDF proposals are also available upon request.

Information on UBC-wide procedures is available on the Applying for CFI Funding page on the Institutional Programs website. A detailed description of the UBC Okanagan CFI Application Instructions & Deadlines (for UBC Okanagan applicants ONLY) is available here.
