Applying for Funding

The Office of Research Services is responsible for reviewing applications, processing them in the RISe database and providing institutional signature. For all external research grant applications, a complete, original application with a completed Research Project Information Form must be endorsed by UBC’s Okanagan campus Vice-Principal Research or their nominee(s). The Associate Director, Office of Research Services, is authorised to provide institutional signature.

Submission to ORS

A complete, original, unstapled copy of the research grant application must be submitted to ORS in person or by email where electronic/scanned signatures are permitted. The application should arrive at ORS on the internal deadline, which for most competitions is two business days. Competitions with higher application volume may have stricter internal deadlines. Applicants are encouraged to check ORS Funding Deadlines for current deadlines.

Research Project Information Form (RPIF) complete with required signatures

*Note: if the grant includes co-applicants from different Okanagan campus departments, the signature page must be completed by both applicants and must include the required signatures from both departments.

**If you have not made a formal application to an agency, but receive notification of a funding award, you must complete a Grant Information Form and RPIF and submit these, along with a copy of the award letter and any other supporting documentation to ORS at first opportunity after notice of award is received.

Submission to Funding Agency

In cases where direct electronic submission by the applicant is required, applicants must ensure that the Office of Research Services has reviewed the application and it has been endorsed/signed appropriately before submitting the electronic version to the funding agency. . ORS may be required to forward the completed, submitted application to the agency (e.g. NSERC DG, SSHRC IDG, CIHR Project/Foundation), and in this event the PI should notify ORS that they have submitted their application. Please read agency submission requirements carefully—often the agency requires different methods of submission for different opportunities.

Research Ethics Requirements

If human subjects / animal subjects / biohazard materials are used for the project, the appropriate certificates of approval are required to be in place as funds will NOT be released until this requirement is met. For a certificate of approval to be valid it must state the exact title of the project and funding agency.

Visit the Behavioural Research Ethics Board for more information.
