Program Description

CIHR Strategic grants provide support for a specific topic or health challenge for researchers to explore/address. Strategic grants are sponsored by the 13 Institutes of CIHR and, to an extent, by CIHR’s initiatives.

Several Strategic grant programs are launched through ResearchNet, with award amounts ranging from thousands to millions of dollars. Some Strategic grants are well planned in advance as huge, multi-year initiatives, while others are launched immediately in reaction to a national or worldwide crisis. Other Strategic grants may recur on annual basis. The Catalyst, Operating, Team, and Planning and Dissemination Grants are examples of common strategic grant programs.

CIHR TEAM & LARGE NETWORK GRANTS

Team & Large Network Grants support collaborative research teams on a major research project. Given the scale and complexity of the research and group, Team & Large grants typically have lengthy application timelines.

CIHR CATALYST GRANTS

The Catalyst Grant provides seed money to support or kickstart a new research initiative which represents the first step towards pursuing more comprehensive funding opportunities.

CIHR OPERATING GRANTS

The Operating Grant contributes to the creation, dissemination and use of health-related knowledge, and to help develop research capacity, by supporting original, high-quality projects.

CIHR PLANNING & DISSEMINATION GRANTS

The Planning & Dissemination Grant supports pre-project planning and/or knowledge dissemination activities. The competition typically run twice per year (Spring and Fall).
