Program Description
Applicants seeking support from both an Alliance Advantage grant and a Mitacs Accelerate grant can apply through a streamlined submission and review process. Until December 19, 2025*, this joint funding opportunity allows applicants to leverage cash contributions from partners for funding from both NSERC and Mitacs. Applicants must complete an Alliance Advantage application and include a Mitacs supplemental application form. As in all Mitacs internships, a cash contribution from an eligible partner is required.
Additional requirements Alliance-Mitacs Accelerate grants
Applications require the following information when outlining the training of HQP in the Alliance template:
- A description of the role of the Mitacs interns in the research project, and an explanation of the quality of the research-based training experiences provided to the interns
- A description of how the internship partner organization is committed to providing supervision and mentorship to the interns
- An explanation of how the number of Mitacs interns and the number of internship units are appropriate to the scope of the project
You must also provide the breakdown of funds requested from both NSERC and Mitacs in support of HQP, including Mitacs interns, in the Proposed expenditures/budget justification.
Mitacs supplemental form: Contact your Mitacs advisor for instructions and support for the Mitacs “Part 1” application form to be submitted with your NSERC Alliance application.
Partner contributions form: To capture Mitacs’ contributions to the project in Form 101, you must complete a partner contributions form (joint call funding partner) outlining Mitacs’ contributions on a yearly basis. Please ensure that you select the Joint call funding partner contributions form in the online system to correctly enter the contributions. In the contact section, provide the name of your local Mitacs advisor and the email of the Mitacs Research Office (grant-management@mitacs.ca).
Once the application is approved (funded) by NSERC, Mitacs requires a “Part 2” application form. Your Mitacs advisor will guide you through this process. NSERC funds will not be released until Mitacs funding arrives at the University.
Applications can be submitted anytime. Note that all applications with private sector partners must include a validated National Security Risk Assessment form, to be included when submitting an RPIF. Only 1 RPIF is required per project, and should include all NSERC, Mitacs, and partner contributions.
*Starting April 1, 2026, Mitacs will no longer be able to match funding already used to meet a matching requirement for a program that receives federal funding. This means that the submission or resubmissions of Mitacs Part 1 forms for matching from NSERC and Mitacs will not be accepted after December 19, 2025. The deadline to submit completed Part 2 forms will be in March 2026.
