NSERC COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH AND TRAINING EXPERIENCE PROGRAM

Program Description

The Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program supports the training and mentoring of teams of highly qualified students and postdoctoral fellows from Canada and abroad through the development of innovative training programs that encourage collaborative and integrative approaches, and address significant scientific challenges associated with Canada’s research priorities and facilitate the transition of new researchers from trainees to productive employees in the Canadian workforce.

UBC is only permitted to submit six applications combined to the regular and industrial streams of the CREATE program (institutional cap), thus applying to CREATE involves a three-stage process for UBC applicants. The internal selection process is managed by SPARC at UBCV, with applications typically due to SPARC late March. Applications that are selected by the internal selection committee will be provided a letter of support from the VPRI, and invited to submit an LOI (due May 1, or the next business day if May 1 is a holiday). Applicants submit LOIs directly. As of 2024, the LOI is not competitive and all applications will proceed to the full application stage. Full applications are due September 22 (or the next business day).

There is a limit on researchers’ participation in multiple active CREATE initiatives. An individual researcher may participate in a maximum of two CREATE initiatives as either an applicant or co-applicant. Additionally, researchers may be the applicant for one CREATE initiative per year.
